I’ve never much cared for Gin, so it was with no small amount of trepidation that I decided to experiment with the floral liquor.

First up was a pretty standard Gin Fizz. Admittedly it was very much a bottom-of-the-Gin-barrel cocktail, as I didn’t bother with freshly squeezed citrus , the egg used for the foam was a few days past expiration, and the Gin was far from what you’d want to drink straight.

That said... A wet shake followed by a second dry shake with egg white produced a perfect foam strong enough to center a metal straw! We’ll call that a success. Taste-wise... 6.5/10.

Next up was a non-traditional Gimlet. Us ing a fresh slush mix from a local restaurant in place of lime, lemon and sugar water, this was a surprisingly balanced drink. No hint of alcohol on the tongue, a light floral overtone, and no single ingredient overpowering the rest. This was something that went down easy, but in such a way as to reward sipping throughout the night.

Tonight I’m going to experiment with building cocktails *inside* of a large ice cube. Hosting a small dinner on Sunday and I might as well make a splash!

I’m a big G&T and gimlet fan. When I first tasted gin I thought it was like chewing pine needles but I came around.

I like gin enough  that my cologne features   gin botanicals....in effect I smell a bit like gin whether I’ve been drinking it or not. And tonight, I am (Negronis with pizza and football).

I do usually like gin. I prefer whisky, but gin is what I like next. I used to drink Bombay Sapphire, but for the last few years it’s been local gins, like Old Order, Victoria, Empress, and Ampersand. Recently I tried Drumshanbo, and liked it a lot. The other day I tried Nikka’s Coffey Gin, which is the most interesting gin I’ve ever had. I usually mix with tonic, either Fentiman’s or Fever Tree, but the Nikka should be had neat.

If you like floral gins, i really liked the Etsu gin (a Japanese one), the Jinzu is also nice but felt sweeter which is less my thing.

+1 on the Nikka. Love the citrus notes and absurdly loooooong aftertaste. It’s one of the very few I’ll skip the lime on in a G&T or just drink on its own.

I’ve had the Dry Fly and Copper Works gins but didn’t think either were significantly  better than a national name like Tanqueray , etc.... I like the herbal notes of some more creative beers but haven’t really found a gin that does that for me yet.

I love gin, it’s definitely my spirit of choice atm. I’m not too fancy though, I drink it on the rocks or with tonic, sometimes a little citrus but that’s it. Aviation is my cheap go to, Hendricks is good also. I have boodles London dry currently, kinda meh on it so far but just opened it so we’ll see if that changes. Tanqueray Rangpur is my all time fav, a little pricier but still very reasonable, most bigger liquor stores carry it but you won’t find it in a gas station or anything.

I’ve been making a lot of Gin Sours recently. Basically a whiskey sour with two small modifications (gin instead of whiskey and lime juice instead of lemon juice) . There might be a more proper name for this than gin sour, but whatevs. It’s basically a gin fizz without the soda water.

2 oz. gin

3/4 oz. fresh lime juice

1/2 oz. simple syrup

1/2 oz. egg white

Garnish of Angostura bitters.

You put all the ingredients in a shaker, and give them a good shake for about 30 seconds. Then add ice and shake it for another 30 seconds. Strain it into your chosen beverage receptacle, then garnish with a couple drops of bitters.

You can use lemon juice instead of lime juice if you’re a purist. But to me personally , lime is preferable with gin.

As for the gin itself. My go-to is Bombay Sapphire. But there are some really interesting products out there to try, some with quite wildly varying flavor profiles.

Some other gin-based cocktails I enjoy include the Aviation (although I don’t know the last time I had creme de violette in the house), Fallen Angel, Vesper (if you’re a James Bond fan), and something my partner called a breakfast martini (which is the actual name apparently, and is essentially a martini with Cointreau and orange marmalade mixed in, although it is also great with apple jelly ).

Final thought, but only applicable if you are a beer drinker.. . If you ever come across a beer called a Sahti, give it a try. It’s an old Finnish recipe that is brewed with juniper berries (and juniper twigs if the brewer is going for authenticity). I made a Sahti/Hefe hybrid last year, and it came out fantastic. Went through all five gallons very quickly. Sam Adams, at one point, did a more traditional one , and it was amazing. Don’t know if you can even find it anymore though.

Other than an occasional gin and tonic, I never used it much. Almost three years ago, I had a few Clover Clubs in a bar in Italy and have been hooked since. Now I make those often, and I also do gin/elderflower/lime juice/simple/tonic as a super refreshing summer cocktail.

I enjoy gin but I don’t particularly seek it out or feel compelled to drink every bottle out there. Can’t beat a classic martini, I usually do it a shade dirty but otherwise very dry. While not as popular drink at this point, a good Tom Collins is pretty splendid as well.

Try using Bombay or something more floral for stronger pours and something drier for mixes at least at first . Tanqaray is my go to for a dry, but there’s tons of options out there. It’s harder to find something as widely distributed and as fragrant as Bombay imo

Gin is great! It was, and I guess still is, my go-to for something stronger than beer. G&T or gimlet. It’s great because it can be mixed very simply with a ton of different flavor outcomes, but also be used in more complicated and original mixes. Flavor profiles of different brands can vary wildly. Most people get turned off by it because they tried one poorly mixed G&T with crap house gin. Someone who naturally loves gin might be ok with that, or someone who's already drunk, but usually not someone trying it for the first time. I'll usually start people off with a gimlet with a decent local brand, if available, or sapphire, or even tanqueray ten.
